KARFREITAG / GOOD FRIDAY

The Crucifixion by Matthias Grünewald ca. 1510-1515. Larger version.
According to Duden, 'Kar-' is related to OHG "chara" = "Weheklage, Trauer," rather than "carne" - meat.
Kar- from an Old High German word, cognate with
English 'care', meaning 'sorrow', 'Wehklage', etc.; 'karg' comes from the
same root.
