RECIPES FOR SUCCESS AND WELL-BEING

The more I read, the more I'm convinced that the modern American diet is a horrible assault on the health of our bodies and brains. I'm absolutely certain that diet drinks, caffeinated drinks, and sugar-soaked beverages and breakfast foods are wreaking havoc on our national health and possibly even psyche.

What's gone wrong when we reach for diet drinks instead of water, one of the most important things we can give our bodies on a daily basis? When white bread is preferred to healthier wheat and whole grain breads? When we're told that low-fat and low-salt is the way, even though our bodies need both for regulating a myriad of functions? When people think margarine is healthier than butter?

Malnourished bodies no longer react or function like they should physically or mentally, due to the inadequate building materials we're ingesting. Is it possible that we're often not hungry, we're just thirsty or that we need water even when we don't feel thirsty? Or that our food is making us crazy, in a certain sense? Where are all these new dis-eases and psychological disorders coming from?

If you care enough about your own health and the health, mental and physical, of your children to invest in a few books that might cause a revolution in your thinking, then please consider the books mentioned. I'm, of course, in no way affiliated with the others and am offering these suggestions out of my own concerns and hopes for better health for myself, my family and my students.

Somebody emailed me and charged me with being obsessed with weight and lacking self-esteem. Nonsense! This is a recurring battle for me, especially after an ankle break and ACL surgery from hockey injuries, both of which have seriously curtailed my participation in sports (I hate to exercise - I'd rather play!). Along with caring about your body naturally goes a concern for higher things and a disciplined life. The higher concerns should be the top priority from which all other things flow and are the basis on which all things in life are properly ordered (work, family, friends, charity, etc.), but sometimes getting a minor detail right on the lower order leads to greater ability or success on the higher things. 1/10/11
