If you can TPR any of the vocab words in class, the kids seem to retain them
for a long, long time.
There is also a game that we play once in a while that really makes the words stick in the kids head. We play it with partners and all it is a simple translation game. I give them a sheet of paper with the vocab words in English numbered from 1 to whatever. On person in the group starts and must translate the words in order correctly, including proper articles. (You can also make them say the principal parts of verbs or the plural forms.) The partner checks for accuracy. If the person makes a mistake, s/he hands the paper to her/his partner and the partner begins with vocab word number 1 and translates the list until he or she makes a mistake. Then the first person tries again, always starting from vocab word #1. The winner is the person who completely translates the pages with no mistakes in one round. To make this look more like a game and not a drill, I arrange the words on a paper in boxes with a "los" box and a "Gewinner" box. My students make sure their partners say the words correctly too. It is difficult to believe, but my students actually play this game/activity with intensity and it really helps them remember their vocab words. I have played this game with 8th graders up to seniors in high school. I hope this helps.

. . . with a classroom stocked with boxes of things and files and files pictures. As often as possible, I keep the students, 7-9 graders, involved in activities manipulating those things, moving them, trading them, buying & selling them, finding them in songs. We are so busy working with them in whole language context or grammatical practices, the kids hardly realize how much vocabulary they are learning.
Each student is required to keep a notebook, where vocabulary is methodically listed and illustrated. Entries are made in the notebook, after the class has become totally familiar with the vocabulary as mentioned above. (Page 8 is their own sketch of a person with body parts named. Page 9 is a drawing of our school and all the methods of transportation real or imagined used to get to school (this year's group added an F-16 plane and a Paddelboot, in deference to 2 rather unique students and some jokes they had created while answering the question "Wie kommst du zur Schule?" Articles are always listed with nouns. Occasionally to save time and effort, I provide a sheet of pictures for the groups of vocabulary, but realize that defeats the purpose of my own system. If the students have to draw a picture of a dress, then write the word 'das Kleid' next to it, it makes a much stronger imprint. I always tell the students to study the lists in their notebook for quizes, but then rarely have to give them. The notebooks incude collections of phrases, tongue twisters, songs, anthing collectable. When they leave me and head for the high school they have a notebook containing more than a thousand vocabulary, most of which they know. I try my best to train them to use their notebook as a reference source.
Wir spielen Lotte mit dem zu lernenden Vokabular. Ich gebe 24 Woerter oder Phrasen von dem jeweiligen Kapitel, welches wir bearbeiten. Studenten schreiben zu Hause diese Phrasen oder Woerter auf Deutsch in ein Gitter (grid,) welches sie auf eigenem Papier selber machen. Das Gitter hat 25 Quadrate. In der Mitte gib es ein freies Quadrat. Es sieht vielleicht so aus:

______________________________________Ich schneide 1 cm breite Streifen vom buten Altpapier (von dem wir Mengen in unseren Briefkkaesten als Information bekommen), gebe jedem Studenten einen Streifen, welchen er/sie in 1 cm Stueckchen zerrreisst, um die Quadrate zu markieren. Ich rufe dann die Woerter oder Phrasen auf englisch auf, und die Studenten legen die bunten Stueckchen Papier in die zustaendigen Quadrate. Wenn der erste Student "Lotto" ruft klatschen wir alle, machen dann aber weiter, bis weitere 3 Studenten Lotte erreicht haben. Danach spielen wir noch einmal oder zweimal das selbe Spiel. Meine Studenten sind ganz begeistert von der Art das Vokabular zu erlernen. Es macht ihnen Spass, neue Woerter auf spielerische Art und Weise beherrschen zu koennen. In der Oberschule wuerde ich Bonbons fuer die Gewinner geben.
In der naechsten Stunde wende ich das Vokabular in der "Muendlichen Interaktion", die ich zu Anfang jeder Stunde gebe, an. (5 Minuten). Ich frage: Wie heisst.... auf deutsch? In der folgenden Stunde haben wir den Vokabular Test. Ich gebe 22 von den 24 Woertern mit 2 extra Punkten (2 Bonus Points - a great motivator). Meine Studenten haben grossen Erfolg mit diesem System und stehen dieser Methode sehr positiv gegenueber. Die ganze Sache erscheint wie ein Spiel, in dem Kameradschaft und Erfolg als Gewinn dominieren. Wir, als Paedagogen wissen zu genau, dass ein umfangreiches Vokabular sehr wichtig fuer den Sprachgebrauch ist. Mit dieser Methode kommen alle mit, auch die Schwachen schaffen es.
Um die Zeitspanne klar zu machen, und so dass Sie es eventuell in Ihren Klassen anwenden koennen, moechte ich erklaeren, dass ich am Community College 2.5 Stunden pro Tag, 5 Stunden (5 units) pro Woche einen Kurs unterrichte. Von dem Augenblick an, in dem ich das Vokabular gebe bis zum Test sind es ungefaer 9 Tage. Am selben Tag, an dem wir den Test haben, gebe ich ein neues Vokabular von 24 Woertern und Phrasen. Ich wende diese Methode schon seit mehreren Jahren an, und kann mit Ueberzeugung sagen, dass sie ueberaus erfolgreich ist. MK
